The term alternative rock or alternative
music was phrased around the early
1980s to describe bands which did
not fit into the mainstream genres
of the modern era.
A
common term for modern rock and
similar genres, it includes indie,
post-punk, hardcore punk, Gothic
rock, college rock and New Wave
bands.
Despite
this, most alternative bands were
identified by their devotion to
punk, which laid the foundation
for underground and alternative
music at the dawn of the 1970s.
